We Never “Guess”, We Look It Up!
People often say: "I want to model you, Steve"
Well, that's fine for the top three arenas. Relationships? I genuinely love my family, and have been happily married to my Soulmate for 23 years.
Martial Arts? In some ways, sure. I genuinely went through the mill. But I don't know what your goals are. If it is to be Billy Jack or Bruce Lee, you might look elsewhere. If you want to be confident, master your fear, have excellent energy and health…maybe so. Danny Inosanto would be a lot better, wouldn't he?
Career? Well…my career is a matter of public record. If publishing three million words, thirty something novels, win award, get on the NY Times Bestseller list and be Guest of Honor at Worldcon or Dragon Con…sure. If you want to be one of the top 100 all-time bestselling authors…I'd look elsewhere. Stephen King would be a lot better, wouldn't he?
What about business? I've had people suggest they want to model me for marketing. I wouldn't suggest it. I'm still on the "Road of Trials". A couple of years from now, we'll really know how accurate my perceptions have been. I'd suggest that you model people who have fully completed the Hero's Journey cycle in that regard, but also adhere to the Three Gates. There are two people I really like there. Russell Brunson is very interesting, but I like Brendon Burchard more. Why? Brunson is a marketer and software guy primarily. As a result, I think he is willing to tip-toe a little closer to the ethical edge than I'm always comfortable with. But Brendon is primarily a performance coach, an author. A guy who was suicidal, then had a near-death experience in a car crash that awoke him to the fact that life was a "golden ticket" and committed to spending the rest of his life spreading the word. He learned marketing to promote this, and then began teaching others how to do the same. I trust him.
In all cases, I would look at the NLP trio of "Belief System, Mental Syntax, and Use of Physiology." Doesn't take a lot of jiggling to get these three into Body, Emotions, and Mind.
How do they use their body? ? How do they use their emotions? What are their strategies and tactics?
What you are looking for is going to be right there. Naysayers will insist that you can't succeed unless you are born rich. Fine. Look for people who achieved great success but slept in their car, lived in a trailer park, or were otherwise homeless. Or born with serious social disadvantage.
You will find that they all took action, they all managed their emotions, and they all had strategies and tactics and were constantly learning and networking.
Study them. If you see that I've finished a complete cycle in the arena you want to model me, I'm honored. But at everything I care about, THERE ARE BETTER PEOPLE. I'm happy to point you to them.
This is critically important right now, as I enter this next arena. Who do I model who could handle this in terms of writing? Well, William Shakespeare certainly comes to mind. What about my physical challenges, raising my skill, fitness and energy? I'd use Steve Muhammad and Dawn Callan.
How about my family? I have to protect my relationship with Tananarive, Jason, Nicki, and Joyce. Steve Muhammad is an excellent family man. And I can tap into my own mother if necessary--not for marriage, certainly, but for commitment to her children absolutely.
So I have the models. All better than me at the thing I'm modeling. All have finished at least one cycle of growth above my own level. Even if they are beyond the horizon from me, they've marked out a trail. THIS is what I suggest. Then research them, study them, bring them into your morning meditation, ask them questions as you go to sleep.
In the arenas in which I'm still working things out, one belief of mine that might be useful is: if I cannot do it now, I CAN LEARN.
This kinda connects to Little Stevie's childhood encyclopedia, World Book's "Childcraft". Their motto: "We never guess, we look it up!"
They were the Lookies. Let's be Lookies, people. Stop thinking you have to figure these things out yourself. There are people whose lives will show you the answer to any question you could ever have. EVEN IF YOU ARE ONLY MODELING SOMEONE SUPERB AT FINDING ANSWERS.
Stop thinking you have to "figure it out" yourself. Stop guessing. Look it up.
